WEST ROME RIDERS

Trail Conditions

The West Rome Riders Snowmobile Club's trail system is maintained by volunteer club members. During the off season, club members work together to maintain the trails, ( cleaning debris, cut trees, building and maintaining bridges, posting signs, marking new trails, etc),  keeping them ready for the snowmobile season.  Our groomer operators donate their own time each winter, working hard to keep up with the huge amount of traffic our trail system experiences. We currently use "class A" 2 groomers, a 2005 Pisten Bully PB Trail Bully (purchased from Mohawk Ltd. Pisten Bully Division, Chadwicks, NY) and a 1996 Pisten Bully PB260D, both pulling 10' wide by 18' long, 6 trip-blade MTN SNOW drags (purchased from MTN Equipment in Dorval, Quebec).  Please respect these groomer operators and give them a "THUMBS UP" to say thank you when they approach you.
REMEMBER: IT'S New York State LAW THAT SNOWMOBILES MUST YIELD TO TRAIL GROOMERS!

Overall Conditions::  Conditions are always changing!   See below for our grooming reports...

For those that are consistently riding snowmobile trails right down the middle, please understand that this does not help the trails stay flat for too long.  Please ride to the right and use the whole marked trail width.  Also, a few people find it necessary to spin their tracks at every opportunity.  This also causes the trails to have bumps and takes the needed snow off the trail base as well.  Let's use COMMON SENSE out there... for all our sakes!  Thank you.

Trail work is done each fall.  Check out the calendar page for dates and time, but most work days are on Sunday's where the group meets at the groomer barn behind Erie Canal Village at 9 am.  We do have a significant amount of trail work to be done each year along with some groomer preventative maintenance too.  No experience is necessary... come by and meet others in our club with the same passion for snowmobiling.  It is both rewarding and fun to be in the outdoors volunteering on our trail system.  Contact Jim Rolf @ 335-0791, Russ Pantzer, Ed Mattia, or Sam Myers to find out more info on trail-work locations/times or to volunteer.  The club purchased a Kabota 4x4 tractor with a bucket last year to help out on the trails, making our efforts easier for the future.  We have 3 chainsaws, a 6x6 Polaris ATV with a trailer to haul it, several hammers, a generator, a cordless screw gun, and so on... all to make the work our volunteers perform as simple as possible.  Just a helping hand or 2 is what we are asking for to work alongside our hardworking volunteers to make the trailwork go faster.

As of 1/18/12, our trails are still not good enough to call "officially open".  There is a little bit of snow, which is really hardened due to the rain and then instant cold we had.  The snow on top of this "concrete snow" is NOT good enough to keep your sled cooled or runners lubed.
